Complications of Endotracheal Intubation in the Intensive Care Unit: A Single-center Experience after Training
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objective: Endotracheal intubation is a frequently performed procedure in the intensive care unit (ICU). Extremely serious complications occur during this procedure. In this study, theoretical and practical training were given to residents who started to work in the medical intensive care unit, and it was aimed to evaluate the complications following training. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted prospectively. Results: A total of 36 patients were included in the study; 16 (45%) were male, and the average age of the patients was 64±16.0 years. The most common indications for admittance to the ICU were shock (50%) and acute respiratory failure (36%). The most common indication for intubation was determined as acute respiratory failure (44%). The intubation was performed as an emergency procedure in 27% of these patients, whereas it was performed semi-urgently in 8% and electively in 65%. Among intubated patients, at least one complication developed in 13 (36%) cases. The drugs most commonly used for sedation were midazolam (76%) and propofol (16.7%). Conclusion: Complications of endotracheal intubation are significant problems in ICUs. A successful procedure of intubation avoids complications. Regular training for endotracheal intubation in the ICU decreases the complications.

Difficult intubation and outcomes in intubated patients admitted to intensive care unit
Background & Aims: Endotracheal intubation is commonly performed in the intensive care unit. Many international guidelines for difficult intubation management are available and the intensivists think that any endotracheal intubation in ICU is potentially difficult with several complications. Materials & Methods: After obtaining ethical approval, this descriptive and analytical study was cond...

Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of complications of endotracheal intubation (ETI) in neonates. Methods The newborns that were admitted and needed urgent or semi-urgent intubation were enrolled in this study over a 1 year period. Route for intubation in all cases were orotracheal. Cases were not routinely sedated or paralyzed. The patients were clinically and rad...

Aims. The aim of the study was to compare endotracheal intubation with i-gel and LMA (laryngeal mask airway) supreme supraglottic airway devices in orbital osteosynthesis surgery. Methods. 134 patients undergoing orbital plasty after fracture were enrolled in our study and were randomized into three groups: 43 in the endotracheal intubation group, 42 in the LMA-Supreme group, and 49 patients w...
متن کاملComplications of intubation in an academic medical-surgical ICU
Introduction Endotracheal intubation is one of the highest risk interventions taking place in the intensive care unit (ICU) and can result in significant complications. In many academic centres, endotracheal intubation is frequently performed by junior trainees under supervision. There is a lack of data to support the safety of this approach and whether there is an association between complicat...
